Sport Tourism is a product of a five-year extensive research project sponsored by the United Nation Development Programme (UNDP), reviewed by the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) and published by Adriens.
The 310-page volume establishes the increasing importance of sport tourism to the economies of the Caribbean region. As part of the cultural industry, sport contributes considerably to infrastructural development, employment creation and foreign exchange earning. Like festivals, sports attract visitors, sell hotel rooms and boost tourism expenditure.
Sport Tourism differentiates between recreational and commercial sport, draws from existing best practices in sport tourism development, and, in the final chapter, outlines a sport business strategy for the Caribbean region.
The book also highlights the role of sport as a stage for promoting youth empowerment, for nurturing skills critical for leadership and anger management as well as a platform for combating discrimination based on gender and ethnicity.
It is printed on gloss paper; has three sets of colour photographs, several tables and a detailed Subject Index.
Sport Tourism is an ideal tool for policy makers, students and the sport fan, and a ‘must-have’ for everyone involved with travel, tourism and sport.
